NHS England and some NHS trusts have been accused by the BMA of undermining the process for recalling striking junior doctors in unexpected and extreme circumstances, making the union’s situation impossible. The junior doctors began a six-day strike, the longest in NHS history, on January 3. The BMA had previously agreed with NHS England to a voluntary process for recalling striking doctors in the event of safety concerns, called a derogation, which had worked well in the past. However, during the current strike, NHS England and some trusts have requested derogations without providing the necessary information to the BMA, causing significant challenges.
