Guilhem Gallart, a French musician diagnosed with ALS in 2015, is receiving hope from a new treatment for the disease. ALS is a deadly neurodegenerative disease that affects about 30,000 Americans at any given time, causing progressive loss of motor and cognitive function. Researchers have discovered a “molecular stabilizer” called S-XL6, which restores the function of a protein linked to ALS and stops its toxic effects. This molecule has been tested successfully in mice, rats, and dogs and is soon expected to move to clinical trials in humans. The researchers hope that the molecule will become a co-treatment for ALS patients in the future.
