By having insulin coated with a protective layer that is broken down in the liver only, it can be released rapidly and lead to fewer side effects than traditional insulin delivery methods. The new method has been shown promising results in animals and researchers hope to test them on humans by 2025. If successful, the oral insulin delivery system could be ready for use in 2-3 years and would be a significant step forward in diabetes management.
