Most People Dropped in Medicaid ‘Unwinding’ Never Tried to Renew Coverage, Utah Finds

A survey of people who lost Medicaid coverage last year found that over half made no effort to renew their coverage due to difficulty navigating paperwork requirements in many cases. The survey revealed that procedural issues were cited in just over 70% of cases nationwide, and 94% of disenrollments in Utah. Many people did not receive renewal documents, found the renewal process difficult, or struggled to reapply for Medicaid. The unwinding of Medicaid coverage, particularly for children, has raised concerns about access to care and large medical bills. High procedural disenrollment rates have led to audits by the Department of Health and Human Services.
