The CQC has called for improvements to maternity services at South Tees NHS Foundation Trust due to serious staff shortages causing the closure of the midwifery-led birthing unit at Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. Both the Friarage Hospital unit and the main maternity services at James Cook University Hospital need overall improvement, especially in leadership, and the safety of the James Cook service specifically. The inspection, part of a national maternity services inspection program, revealed deficiencies across England. Inspectors noted the absence of a birthing pool and emphasized the need for improvements to ensure quality and safety in maternity services.
