A recent survey conducted in the Netherlands showed that most cardiologists do not routinely screen for cognitive impairment in older patients with heart failure, despite its recommendation in current guidelines. The survey included 36 respondents, only 3% of whom performed structured cognitive screening, and 83% of whom noted that not enough attention is paid to cognitive impairment. However, there was openness to the idea of a dedicated “heart-brain clinic” to carry out full care for patients with heart failure and cognitive impairment. There was a need for more training and a desire for a clear protocol for systematic cognitive screening within cardiac care, according to the survey results.
