Research from the British Journal of Ophthalmology indicates that corneal transplant surgeries have the highest risk of postoperative endophthalmitis, especially in men and older adults. The study examined 100% Medicare fee-for-service and Medicare Advantage claims and identified 9744400 intraocular surgeries from 2016 to 2019. The rate of endophthalmitis at 42 days post-surgery was 0.09%, with the highest rates occurring in corneal transplant surgeries. The study also found that older age, male gender, and type of surgery were risk factors for developing endophthalmitis. The researchers emphasized the importance of understanding these risk factors to guide patient counseling and prevention strategies.
