In 1987, she became the first woman to graduate from the University of the West Indies with a postgraduate degree in public health. In 2003, she joined the Pan American Health Organization, where she became a leading figure in global health, eventually being elected as its director in 2017. Her work focused on healthcare access, equity, and sustainability. Etienne’s childhood experiences and dedication to improving healthcare made her a respected and pioneering figure in public health.
