New research in Diabetologia shows that remission from type 2 diabetes after substantial weight loss is associated with reduced rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study followed participants in the Look AHEAD study over 12 years, finding that those who achieved remission had lower rates of CVD and CKD. The study also noted the challenges of maintaining weight loss and remission. Longer-term remission was associated with even greater risk reduction. The authors concluded that achieving remission from type 2 diabetes is associated with later health benefits, although keeping weight off using lifestyle interventions is difficult.
