Amoxicillin Short Course Effective for Febrile UTIs

New research found that a 5-day course of oral amoxicillin-clavulanic acid was as effective as a 10-day course for treating noncomplicated febrile urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children. The study of 142 children, aged 3 months to 5 years, revealed a 2.8% recurrence rate in the short-course group versus 14.3% in the standard group within 30 days of treatment completion. Clinical recovery and indications of antibiotic resistance were similar between the groups. No adverse events were reported in the standard group, and one case of diarrhea occurred in the short-course group. The researchers noted potential benefits and future research areas for shortening antibiotic courses.
