Maintaining a healthy weight during adolescence is important for future well-being. Obesity in adolescence has been linked to an increased risk of developing early chronic kidney disease before the age of 30. Chronic kidney disease is a leading cause of death in the US, affecting 1 in 7 adults. Childhood obesity affects 22.2% of adolescents and is measured using body mass index (BMI). Researchers found that even mild obesity and high-normal BMI in adolescence can contribute to the increased risk of chronic kidney disease. The study was based on data from 593,660 Israeli adolescents and showed that the risk of developing chronic kidney disease increased with obesity.
