An international academic consortium has identified 13 biomarkers that significantly improve the ability to predict cardiovascular disease risk in people with type 2 diabetes. The analysis, led by researchers at The Johns Hopkins University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Lund University, reviewed and analyzed medical studies to find the biomarkers, with a focus on finding predictors beyond traditional risk factors. The standout biomarker was N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), which was found to be strongly correlated with cardiovascular disease risk. The findings of the analysis could potentially change the standards of care for patients with type 2 diabetes and increase preventative care for those at higher risk.
