Wasabi For Cognitive Health? Researchers Say It Could Improve Memory

A study found that a supplement containing 6-MSITC, the main bioactive compound in wasabi, improved short-term and long-term memory in healthy participants above 60. The trial involved 72 participants split into two groups, with one group taking 100mg of wasabi extract daily and the other taking a placebo. After 12 weeks, the group taking wasabi showed improved memory functioning. The main compound in wasabi, 6-MSITC, was found to reduce inflammation and oxidant levels in the brain, specifically in the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory. Researchers are hopeful that wasabi could be effective in enhancing memory functioning in the aging population. However, further tests are needed to determine the effects of wasabi on other age groups and memory decline associated with dementia.
