The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends comprehensive, intensive behavioral interventions for children with high body mass index (BMI), including supervised physical activity sessions for up to a year. Nearly 20% of kids aged 2-19 have high BMIs, indicating obesity. The interventions should include at least 26 hours of supervised physical activity, group sessions on healthy eating habits and exercise techniques, and involvement of various professionals. The task force takes a conservative approach, not recommending medication or surgery for children with obesity due to lack of long-term research. The guidelines are in draft stage and available for public comment until Jan. 16, 2024.
