A study published in the Christmas issue of The BMJ found that sales of emergency contraception in the US increased by about 10% in the week after the New Year holiday, indicating a greater risk of unprotected sex associated with this time period. The researchers also suggest unmet contraceptive needs in the US, given the increased restrictions on abortion in many states. The researchers analyzed retail scan data for levonorgestrel, a medication, and found that sales increased following New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, and other holidays. The researchers also highlighted the importance of access to contraception and targeted behavioral risks and strategies to mitigate sexual violence during holidays.
