The Social Security Administration head sent an apology letter to members of Congress, following underestimating the extent of overpayments to beneficiaries. This was days after news organizations reported the agency demanding money back from over 2 million people each year, twice what had been disclosed at a House panel. Concerns have been brought up over whether the agency had intentionally deflated numbers. The agency has been lacked transparency, not releasing these numbers beforehand. New measures will be essential in addressing overpayment issues as well as communicating openly with Congress. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley’s confirmation will bring new changes to the Commission of Social Security.
