America’s Poison Centers reported a surge in calls related to the weight loss drug semaglutide, with nearly 3,000 calls received in 2023, compared to 200 in 2019. This drug is used to treat diabetes and for weight loss. A national shortage of the drug led to some pharmacies making compounded versions which might have been responsible for accidental overdoses. The calls to the poison centers reported symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, indicating an overdose. Misuse of the dose was also reported, with some users accidentally taking ten times the recommended amount.
