Consultant obstetrician David Sim has been suspended for 12 months from the UK medical register after sterilizing a woman without her consent in Northern Ireland. He believed the patient wanted the sterilization due to previous conversations, but admitted there was no consent form and his approach could be seen as paternalistic. He referred himself to the General Medical Council (GMC) after an investigation by his NHS trust. The patient was admitted to Daisy Hill Hospital for minor bleeding and, after more complications, was anesthetized for an emergency caesarean. Sim told her he might need to perform a hysterectomy but instead sterilized her.
