A National Institutes of Health working group recommended increasing salaries of postdoctoral researchers to $70,000 per year, with adjustments for inflation, and capping the length of the position to five years. They also suggested increasing NIH support for international postdocs, ensuring professional development time, creating new funding opportunities for underrepresented scientists, and giving all postdocs the same benefits. However, there are concerns that these changes could have unintended consequences. The decline of postdocs in academia, as young scientists move to industry jobs, and the impacts of this shift on research projects and academic positions, were also discussed. The group’s recommendations now await a decision on endorsement and implementation by the NIH.
