The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in India has come under scrutiny after over 100 cough syrups made for export failed quality tests. Specialists have criticized the CDSCO for lacking oversight to ensure the safety of medicines manufactured in India. A report from the CDSCO revealed that out of over 2000 cough syrups tested, 128 syrups from 54 companies meant for export had quality issues. India’s director general of foreign trade has mandated that cough syrups for export must undergo tests at a government laboratory and be authorized with a certificate of pharmaceutical products. This investigation has raised concerns about the regulation of medicines in India.
