A recent study shows that the severity of amyloid deposition in the brain is more important than age in determining who will benefit from treatments to slow down Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers examined the relationship between amyloid deposition and new dementia cases in 94 individuals who were cognitively healthy when the study began and found that the overall baseline amyloid burden and brain health are better predictors of Alzheimer’s progression than age. They also observed that amyloid accumulation increased faster in older people, and that the baseline amyloid burden and other markers of brain damage were the strongest predictors of risk. The study was published in the journal Neurology.
