‘I Am Just Waiting to Die’: Social Security Clawbacks Drive Some Into Homelessness

Many individuals, especially Black and Hispanic people, are facing dire consequences as the Social Security Administration attempts to recover overpayments, with some people receiving notices to repay amounts in the tens of thousands of dollars that they allegedly were overpaid. Denise Woods, for example, had her disability payments terminated without notice and is now driving nightly to find safe places to sleep after renting a house with her son. The agency claims it was overpaying Woods and has demanded that she send back nearly $58,000, withholding her $2,048 in disability monthly from February 2026. The SSA says it operates within legal parameters and offers flexible options to repay.
