A recent study from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm found that the rate of hospitalizations for RSV infection in children is higher than for the omicron strain of SARS-CoV-2 or influenza. RSV causes mild symptoms like a cold, but severe cases can lead to pneumonia and bronchiolitis. The research revealed that hospitalization rates for RSV were higher in all age groups, with the odds for infants aged up to one year being 11 times greater than those diagnosed with omicron. The study, however, has some limitations. According to the CDC, RSV causes approximately 58,000–80,000 hospitalizations and 100–300 deaths in children under 5. It can be prevented by giving antibodies to young children or through maternal vaccination. The FDA approved a monoclonal antibody against RSV for infants under 8 months of age.
