The FDA has issued a new alert regarding the use of promethazine hydrochloride, an old drug used for allergic reactions, motion sickness, and post-operative nausea and vomiting. The alert specifically covers the administration of the drug as a deep intramuscular injection or a slow intravenous injection, recommending the former to reduce the risk of severe chemical irritation and tissue damage. If intravenous dosing is necessary, the FDA advises following updated drug label information and using a central venous catheter. The drug’s history dates back to the 1940s, and manufacturers are required to update prescribing and labeling information to reflect the new safety details.
