The study published in Cell Reports Medicine found that changes in multiple biochemical and hematological parameters occur up to eight years before the diagnosis of Crohn’s disease and up to three years before the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. The researchers examined more than 20,000 IBD patients and 4.6 million potential controls, and identified widespread significant changes in the parameters that occurred before the diagnosis of both conditions. These findings can provide important insights for future disease prevention and treatment strategies. The preclinical phase of the disease far exceeds previous expectations, indicating the need for considerations when developing future treatment strategies. One author disclosed ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
