The CDC has issued a health advisory for a more serious and infectious variant of the mpox virus reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), now spreading in 22 out of 26 provinces. This variant has a 10% fatality rate, with person-to-person transmission occurring, including through sexual contact and household contact. Health officials in Rhode Island and Nashville, Tennessee, have reported a surge in mpox cases. Symptoms of mpox infection include fever, chills, skin rash, and swollen lymph nodes. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected persons or animals, and through shared materials. Prevention includes vaccination and minimizing skin contact and changing sexual activities if at high risk.
