66-year-old Ron Winters, a Marine Corps veteran, was diagnosed with bladder cancer in August 2022. He had to seek care through the VA’s Community Care Program due to VA delays in prior authorizations. This process has been a nightmare, causing delays in treatments and surgeries for Winters. Research has also shown that prior authorization is related to increased anxiety among cancer patients. Many cancer patients have had their care delayed due to these hurdles. Legislation has been introduced in many states to address the problem. Unfortunately, Winters’ case is a reminder of the VA scandal from nearly a decade ago, where veterans waited for care and some even died due to delays.
