Researchers from McMaster University and the University of British Columbia in Canada have found an association between race or ethnicity and obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI). Studies have shown that Asian women in high income countries such as Australia, Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States have higher rates of OASI, 1.5 to 3 times as high as in white women, even after adjusting for delivery and episiotomy. This suggests that there are racial or ethnic disparities in OASI rates that warrant further investigation.
