A study conducted by Ohio State University reveals concerning eating habits of U.S. adults, with the average adult consuming a meal’s worth of snacks per day. These snacks contribute almost a quarter of daily caloric intake and one-third of added sugar. Participants in the study consumed between 400 and 500 calories a day in snacks. Major snacking foods are high in carbohydrates, fats, and sugars. Individuals with type 2 diabetes ate fewer sugary snacks, indicating that dietary education can be beneficial. Researchers suggest substituting less nutritious snacks with healthier options, and considering overall dietary intake when making snack choices. The study was published in PLOS Global Public Health.
