Dan Shively and Jeffrey Dowd were both bank president and auto mechanic respectively, before they both developed dementia and ended up in Canyon Creek Memory Care Community in Montana. Dowd was known for his aggressive behavior, leading to a fatal incident where he pushed Shively, causing his death. Dowd continued to exhibit violent behavior toward other residents, leading to multiple altercations. Violent incidents between residents in long-term care facilities are common, with dementia residents being especially prone to aggression. Despite the risks, facilities often retain residents they can’t manage, contributing to safety concerns. Canyon Creek denied liability for Shively’s death, but a jury found them negligent and awarded his family $310,000 in damages.
