A study found 79 unique pigments in 974 permanent makeup inks in the U.S., with 10 of them linked to allergic contact dermatitis. Both organic and inorganic pigments used in cosmetic tattoos may cause this skin reaction. The study investigated the use of organic pigments versus heavy metals in permanent makeup and their association with allergic contact dermatitis. While most pigments were organic, some metallic pigments like aluminum and chromium can still cause allergic reactions. Better labeling of tattoo inks and protocols for testing tattoo pigment allergies are recommended for the benefit of consumers and patch testing physicians.
