WHO waits on data after fatal first human H5N2 bird flu case

The World Health Organization is awaiting genetic data after the first confirmed human death from the H5N2 bird flu strain in Mexico. The 59-year-old man had no history of exposure to poultry but had underlying health conditions. There have been no further infections reported. The risk to the general population is considered low. Mexico’s health ministry confirmed the case and stated there was no risk of contagion. Vaccine manufacturers are developing candidate vaccines for pandemic preparedness. The WHO has agreements with manufacturers for vaccine distribution in the event of an avian flu pandemic. Monitoring is ongoing in the area to detect other cases.
