Research has shown that there are differences in how Parkinson’s disease affects men and women. Women are more prone to develop tremor-dominant PD and perform better on cognitive tests, but also experience more pain and depression symptoms. Response to treatment also varies, with women showing better improvement in daily activities but also more side effects. Hormones, specifically elevated levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, may play a role in the onset and progression of PD. Oestrogen has shown potential in preventing brain cell death and reducing damage. Studies are being conducted to explore how hormonal changes throughout a woman’s life impact PD symptoms, with a focus on developing personalized treatment approaches.
