Surge in malaria cases linked to aircraft-transported mosquitoes

Malaria cases in Europe are increasing due to mosquitoes transported by aircraft from endemic areas. Most cases in the EU/EEA are travel-related. Locally-acquired infections, including Odyssean malaria, are also reported sporadically. A systematic review found rising cases of airport and luggage malaria, with older patients more likely to die. In France, locally acquired infections have remained constant, with more Odyssean cases reported since 2011. Recommendations include enforcing disinsectisation of aircraft, early consideration of locally-acquired malaria in patients with unexplained fever, and improved surveillance and prevention measures. More structured surveillance and standardized case definitions are needed to effectively combat the spread of malaria.
