New technique tracks blood sugar with light

Diabetes management requires regular blood glucose monitoring and insulin administration, usually through painful finger pricks. Researchers are exploring non-invasive methods using modern electronics. While infrared light has been proposed, near-infrared light (NIR) is more accessible. A study by Tomoya Nakazawa’s team developed a metabolic index based on the phase delay between oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin signals obtained from NIR measurements. They found a strong correlation between this index and blood glucose levels in experiments on healthy subjects. If validated in clinical trials on diabetics, this technique could lead to affordable and convenient noninvasive blood glucose monitoring devices.
