The 2023 HSE annual report showed that almost two-thirds of patients aged 75 and older in emergency departments waited more than six hours before being admitted or discharged. Only 36.4% of this age group were seen to within six hours. Overall, 57.1% of patients of all ages were seen to within six hours last year. The report also revealed that key treatment access targets were being missed. The 2023 National Service Plan acknowledged the issue and outlined steps to address it.
