Seizures in children are common, with febrile seizures being the most common in young children between 6 months and 6 years old. These seizures are associated with fever and do not require investigation if the child returns to their baseline neurological status. Afebrile seizures may be provoked or unprovoked, with new onset unprovoked seizures possibly indicating an epilepsy syndrome. Between 0.5% and 1% of children experience a non-recurrent, single unprovoked convulsive episode. While 43-87% of patients with unprovoked seizures undergo blood testing, only 46-55% undergo urgent neuroimaging. Specific risk factors identified during history and physical examination can help determine which patients may benefit from further testing.
