A study has found that a large portion of low-income African Americans and White Americans are consuming too much salt, which is linked to higher rates of cardiovascular disease mortality. The lack of access to healthier food options, education about better food choices, and affordability are key factors contributing to excessive salt intake in these populations. The study showed that every 1,000-milligram increase in salt intake above recommended levels was associated with a greater risk of death from heart disease. To address this issue, experts recommend portion control, reducing consumption of processed and fast foods, and using herbs and spices instead of salt for flavor. The study highlights the importance of addressing dietary habits, especially in underserved communities, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
