Doctors urged to watch for bird flu infections in dairy farm workers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert regarding H5N1 bird flu outbreaks in U.S. dairy cows that have led to at least one human infection. Health care providers are urged to consider H5N1 in patients with relevant exposure history, isolate suspected cases, and provide early treatment with Tamiflu. Though there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission, infected cows have been reported in multiple states. The CDC advises destroying milk from infected cows and avoiding consumption of raw milk or cheese. It is unclear how the virus is spreading among cows, but genetic analysis shows minor changes in the virus sequences.
