Dementia More Likely in Patients With Essential Tremor Than Other Groups

admin

Patients with essential tremor have an increased risk of developing dementia compared to the general population. A study presented at the 2024 American Academy of Neurology meeting found that patients with essential tremor had higher rates of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, leading to loss of functional ability and increased mortality. The study followed 222 patients with essential tremor over 5.1 years, with a cumulative prevalence of MCI at 26.6% and dementia at 18.5%. The rates of MCI and dementia in essential tremor were higher than in the general population but lower than in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The findings suggest a significant impact of cognitive impairment in essential tremor patients.
