Study suggests using neurostimulation therapies on a specific brain circuit could treat PTSD

A study led by Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that individuals with damage to the amygdala, the fear center of the brain, were less likely to develop PTSD. The researchers evaluated veterans with penetrating traumatic brain injuries and identified a specific brain circuit that could be a therapeutic target for PTSD treatment using transcranial magnetic stimulation. The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, showed promising results in treating a patient with severe PTSD. While more research is needed, the findings provide an important step towards developing better treatments for individuals suffering from PTSD.
