Researchers at WashU School of Medicine have discovered a gut bacterial enzyme with unknown metabolic capabilities. This enzyme, called FAAH, was found in a bacterium associated with the growth benefits of a therapeutic food to treat childhood malnutrition. The study led by Dr. Jeffrey I. Gordon focused on the gut microbiomes of children receiving the therapy and identified a bacterial strain capable of producing and metabolizing key molecules that regulate various physiological functions. This discovery opens the door to new therapeutic possibilities and sheds light on how gut microbes impact human health beyond malnutrition. The findings were published in the journal Science.
