FDA Updates ‘Healthy’ Claim for Foods — but Use Is Voluntary

The FDA issued a final rule updating the “healthy” nutrient claim on food labels, with compliance by manufacturers being voluntary. To qualify as “healthy,” a food product must contain recommended food group equivalents and meet specified limits for saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. Certain foods like nuts, seeds, and oils that were previously excluded now qualify as “healthy.” The FDA is exploring the development of a symbol for qualifying products and working on front-of-package nutrition labeling. Some critics believe the new rule falls short in allowing harmful food chemicals in labeled products. The final rule will be published in December 2024.
