New protein risk score shows strong clinical utility for predicting death from heart failure

A new protein risk score has been developed to predict the risk of death for individuals with heart failure (HF). The score, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, uses high-throughput proteomics and a community-based cohort of plasma proteins to predict mortality risk in HF patients. Researchers selected 38 unique proteins for the protein risk score, which had good calibration and demonstrated greater clinical utility compared with the clinical model. The score could help clinicians better stratify mortality risk in HF patients and may be used to guide the management of patients with advanced HF or those at particularly high risk for adverse outcomes. This tool could have clinical benefits for precision risk prediction in HF.
