A study led by Brigham and Women’s Hospital suggests that spending more time in bright light may improve mood by promoting better sleep. The study included over 6,600 participants and found that regular sleep was associated with lower depression symptoms. Participants who spent more time in bright light had more regular sleep, leading to lower odds of mild or severe depression. The study highlights the importance of consistent, regular sleep for overall health and suggests that future research should explore the role of sleep regularity in the relationship between light exposure and mood. Vitamin D was also associated with greater bright light exposure and sleep regularity but not with depression symptoms.
