Framing chores as learning opportunities encourages child autonomy, study shows

A study by Yale researchers found that parents are less likely to intervene when children are getting dressed if the task is framed as a learning opportunity. Overparenting, where adults take over tasks that children should do on their own, diminishes children’s motivation and ability to complete tasks independently. The study showed that framing tasks as learning opportunities reduced parental intervention by about 50%. Parents reported taking over less on tasks perceived as greater learning opportunities. Children also received more encouragement when tasks were framed as educational. The study suggests that emphasizing tasks as learning opportunities can reduce overparenting and promote children’s independence, persistence, and resilience.
