After a San Diego couple’s son was bitten by a rattlesnake and required expensive antivenom treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit, they received a large bill. The cost of the antivenom accounted for over two-thirds of the total cost, amounting to $213,000. The high price of antivenom is attributed to hospitals adding markups to cover overhead costs and lack of competition in the market, with only two FDA-approved rattlesnake antivenoms available. Drug pricing can be confusing for patients as hospital bills often do not reflect the actual cost of the medication.
