The report stresses the importance of normalizing conversations about death and improving access to early palliative care. NCEPOD reviewed data on the care of patients with dementia, heart failure, lung cancer, and liver disease who died in hospital and found that too few had access to palliative care. Providing early palliative care can improve patients’ quality of life and increase the chances of a “good death.” The report emphasizes the need for hospitals to prioritize end-of-life care planning.
