Heat waves are linked to increased emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths among dually eligible individuals over 65 years old. A study analyzed Medicare and Medicaid data from 2016 to 2019, including over 5 million individuals, across 50 states and Washington, DC. Results showed a 10% increase in heat-related emergency department visits, a 7% increase in hospitalizations, and a 4% higher mortality rate during heat waves. Clinicians are advised to assess heat wave risks for at-risk patients, adjust medications as needed, and refer them to social services. The study had limitations including potential omissions in coding and lack of adjustment for air quality or indoor heat exposures.
