Research identifies optimal body weight to reduce cardiovascular risk in diabetes patients

New research presented at the European Congress on Obesity identifies the optimal body weight range for adults with type 2 diabetes to minimize the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Maintaining a BMI of 23-25 kg/m² was best for those aged 65 or younger, while a BMI of 26-28 kg/m² was ideal for those over 65. The study involved 22,874 UK Biobank participants with type 2 diabetes over nearly 13 years. The findings suggest a U-shaped relationship between BMI and cardiovascular death risk, with different optimal BMI cut-off points for different age groups. Further research is needed to confirm these results.
